Children ages 5 to 14 account for almost 40 percent of all sports-related injuries treated in hospitals. On average the rate of severity of injury increases with a child's age. As the child develops, the various ligaments of the bones of the feet start to develop and strengthen, and the arches become apparent. Occasionally this may be late in occurring or they may be weak, and body weight may keep the soles against the floor.
